Study Title: A Game of Notes: What Methods of Gamification Can Improve Student Motivation in Synote?

Please read this information carefully before deciding to take part in this research.  It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you are happy to participate you will be asked to tick a consent check box.

What is the research about?

This is a student project which will contribute towards my Third Year Individual Project for the award of Computer Science BSc. I am conducting this research to find out the best methods of gamification to improve student motivation and participation in Synote, I will be asking your opinions on various potential additions to Synote to find out what ideas are popular.

Why have I been asked to participate?

You have been asked because I would like as many university students as possible to take part in this questionnaire in order to gather a wide range of opinions.

What will happen to me if I take part?

If you decide to take part, you will take this 5-10 minute questionnaire by answering whether a particular suggested technique would motivate you to edit an incorrect lecture transcript. You may optionally write suggestions or give more details on why you answered the way you did.

Are there any benefits in my taking part?

You will contribute valuable data towards my Third Year Individual Project which may end up improving Synote’s user interface and effectiveness.

Are there any risks involved?

None beyond everyday life, you will simply be asked to answer questions based on your opinions.

Will my participation be confidential?

Your participation will be completely confidential. This study complies with the Data Protection Act and University policy, no identifiable information will be stored. My supervisor and I will have access to the data, but it will not be identifiable to you.

What should I do if I want to take part?

Simply tick the check box and click the button to start the questionnaire

What happens if I change my mind?

You may withdraw during this questionnaire at any time without your rights being affected. However, once you have submitted your answers it may not be withdrawn because it cannot be traced back to you.

What will happen to the results of the research?

The results will be used and written in my Third Year Individual Project. If you wish to receive a copy of anonymised results, contact the researcher. Research data will be stored until May 2018.
