What is the research about?

My name is Dr Seth Giddings, and I am an Associate Professor of Digital Culture and Design at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. I am inviting you to participate in a study I am running on behalf of the Coastal Creatives Consortium of regional universities (Bournemouth, Bournemouth Arts, Chichester, Portsmouth, Southampton and Southampton Solent). The consortium’s mission is to conduct research into the South Central region’s digital creative industries and to assess the demand for industry-university collaborative research, development and educational needs and funding.

The research question is: What kinds of research collaboration and partnerships (if any) would regional digital creative industries like to establish with local universities?

This study was approved by the Faculty Research Ethics Committee (FREC) at the University of Southampton (Ethics/ERGO Number: 63710).

What will happen to me if I take part?

This study involves completing an anonymous questionnaire which should take approximately five minutes of your time. If you are happy to complete this survey, you will need to tick (check) the box below to show your consent. As this survey is anonymous, the researcher will not be able to know whether you have participated, or what answers you provided. However, we have included the option for you to provide your name and contact details, should you be interested in being involved in further research as part of this project. If you agree to this, your details will be processed and stored securely and separately from your survey answers. You will only be contacted in relation to further activities in the Coastal Creatives research project.

Why have I been asked to participate?

You have been asked to take part because you work in the digital creative industries in the South Central region. I am aiming to recruit around 50 participants for this study.

What information will be collected?

In this survey, you will be asked to respond to a range of questions about the types of possible collaborative projects and relationships with local universities’ research and teaching, including funded research bids, R&D projects, networking opportunities, continuing professional development, etc. The survey will also ask for some information on the kind of business and field of the creative industries in which you work. No information that might compromise your anonymity will be expected, though you can opt to provide contact details if you wish.

Some of the survey questions contain textboxes where you can add further information. Please note that in order for this survey to be anonymous, you should not include in your answers any information from which you, or other people, could be identified.

You do not have to answer all the questions if you do not wish to do so.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

If you decide to take part in this study, you will not receive any direct benefits; however, your participation will contribute to knowledge in this area of research and will help shape university-industry relationships in the region.

Are there any risks involved?

It is expected that taking part in this study will not cause you any psychological discomfort and/or distress.

What will happen to the information collected?

All information collected for this study will be stored securely on a password-protected computer and backed up on a secure server. Only the researchers will have access to this information.

The information collected will be analysed and published in a report. It may be included in academic journal articles and presented at conferences.

The University of Southampton conducts research to the highest standards of ethics and research integrity. In accordance with our Research Data Management Policy, data will be held for 10 years after the study has finished when it will be securely destroyed.
