English Medium Administration & Internationalisation: Needs Survey

Please read this before starting the survey

My name is Alison Dickens and I am a Principal Enterprise Fellow in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

I am inviting you to participate in a study regarding a project I and my colleagues Mary Page and Kate Borthwick are conducting in partnership with your institution (UFMG) relating to English Medium Administration & Internationalisation. The project aims to develop an online course (MOOC) to support University staff who work wholly or partly in administration or internationalisation and who need to use English as a medium of communication .

For this study we aim to answer the following questions:

  1. What are the needs of staff who use English as a medium of communication in an international University?
  2. What situations do they routinely encounter which present issues for intercultural communication?
  3. How can on an online (open) course help address some of these needs and issues?

This study was approved by the Faculty Research Ethics Committee (FREC) at the University of Southampton (Ethics/ERGO Number: 71713).

This study involves completing an anonymous questionnaire which should take approximately 15 minutes of your time. If you are happy to complete this survey, you will need to tick (check) the box below to show your consent. As this survey is anonymous, the research team will not be able to know whether you have participated, or what answers you provided.

You have been asked to take part because you are a member of staff or a graduate student at UFMG.

You are receiving an invitation to participate because Professor Ana Larissa Adorno Marciotto Oliveira has agreed to forward to you information about this study on the research team’s behalf.

We are aiming to recruit around 20 participants for this study.

The questions in this survey ask for information in relation to the nature of your role at UFMG and how you use English as a second language in the course of your work. We are interested in finding out what specific needs you have for support in your use of English as a medium of communication. We will use your answers to help us to develop an online course (MOOC) to provide professional development to university staff in the area of English Medium Administration & Internationalisation

Some of the survey questions contain textboxes where you will be asked to type in your own answers. Please note that in order for this survey to be anonymous, you should not include in your answers any information from which you, or other people, could be identified.

If you decide to take part in this study, you will not receive any direct benefits; however, your participation will contribute to knowledge in this area of research. You will also be invited to attend the first run of the online course (MOOC) which we will develop as a result of your input

It is expected that taking part in this study will not cause you any psychological discomfort and/or distress, however, should you feel uncomfortable you can leave the survey at any time.

All information collected for this study will be stored securely on a password protected computer and backed up on a secure server. We would very much like to include quotes from the information that you have given in text boxes but this will be anonymised so that you cannot be identified. Only the researcher and their supervisor will have access to this information.

The information collected will be analysed and used to provide information and resources for the proposed online course (MOOC).

The University of Southampton conducts research to the highest standards of ethics and research integrity. In accordance with our Data Management Policy, data will be securely destroyed after the EMA MOOC has been developed and finalised.

If you are unhappy about any aspect of this study and  would like to make a formal complaint, you can contact the Head of Research Integrity and Governance, University of Southampton, on the following contact details: Email: rgoinfo@soton.ac.uk, phone: + 44 2380 595058.
